Your eyes weren’t deceiving you if you thought you saw Jennifer Jones cruising around the local area, be it at local golf courses, curling rinks, or partaking in the minutiae of daily life. |
Jones is generally accepted as the greatest female curler of all time, one of the country’s most notable female athletes and an icon in her sport in both her home province of Manitoba and Canada. |
Jones has lived in the Barrie area with her family for several years. In fact, she sounds an awful lot like so many transplanted locals who now make the area home. |
“I’m a very proud Manitoban,” Jones tells BarrieToday, “and it took me a while (to decide to move here), but I have to say that we live in pretty much the best area to live. |
“You have the lakes (of cottage country) nearby, Toronto is just an hour so down the highway. … It’s a great place to be and to live.” |
Jones, 47, and her husband, fellow curler Brent Laing, have two daughters. Their life is a dizzying whirl raising two kids, keeping sharp on the ice, and keeping up with professional obligations. A trained lawyer, Jones works as a legal advisor and Laing has a senior role with World Financial Group. |
***************************************************************************************** |
Life is busy, especially in a pandemic that has added extra layers of preparation and caution. Jones has been able to stay in game shape using the Alliston Curling Club as her base. |
“They have been great to us and (managed) to keep great ice in since COVID,” said Jones, who occasionally uses the Barrie Curling Club to train/practise in so-called normal times. |
We have now been approved for a Sustainability Fund through Sport4Ontario. If you are interested in making a donation to the Alliston Curling Club, you can do so through this funding program and get a charitable tax receipt.

In consultation with the Alliston Curling Club membership, recognizing the current push towards government mandated vaccination passports and in light of the changing pandemic environment, the Board of Directors has approved a Covid Vaccination Policy for members for the upcoming curling season.
For the 2021/22 season, every member will be required to be “fully vaccinated” with a Health Canada approved Covid vaccine (any combination of vaccines is acceptable) at least 14 days prior to October 3, 2021. Accommodation for people who cannot be vaccinated (e.g., for medical or religious reasons) will be considered, and may include mandatory masking and regularly submitting negative Covid tests.
At this time, members will be required to declare their vaccination status as part of the membership registration process. If the government establishes a vaccination passport in future, we may adopt this system to obtain proof of vaccination status.
Given the uncertainty around Covid variants, it is our belief that vaccinations alone are not sufficient and as such, our on-ice protocols will be similar to last season, based on CurlON Guidelines and in accordance with government requirements. Face coverings will be mandatory in the clubhouse except when seated in the lounge. They will be strongly recommended when on the ice except when sweeping or throwing, and only one active sweeper will be permitted to achieve physical distancing. To protect themselves and other members, we are expecting that most will wear their face coverings for most of the time when on the ice. If not and other members feel uncomfortable, league convenors will have the authority to mandate face coverings.
We will be allowing a little more flexibility accessing the club before and after league games, and for bonspiels, CurlON events and rentals. In doing so, however, we will be enforcing government-imposed capacity limits in the clubhouse (basement and lounge).
In addition to the protocols, the club is equipped with sanitizing supplies, and we have a professional cleaner on contract to provide regular cleaning services. We will be continuing to ask for everyone’s cooperation regarding sanitization of high-touch surfaces to help keep us all safe.
To fulfill government requirements for contact tracing, we will continue to use the CurlON app to keep track of everyone accessing the club. QR codes will be issued to members, parents/guardians of junior members, event participants and employees. Guests will be able to sign-in to the app on arrival.
Our Covid Hotlines (705-250-0320, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) remain in place and these can be used to report any covid-related concerns or symptoms in accordance with your COVID Declaration.
We are committed to doing our part to keep our membership and community safe. In light of the current pandemic landscape and your feedback, we believe this is the safest and most responsible way forward. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me
ACC has developed our own curling protocols based on CurlON Guidelines and in accordance with government requirements. Our priority is to maintain a healthy and safe environment. Initially, we will be limiting club access to Members only to minimize our “socialbubble”. The club will be equipped with extra sanitizing supplies, and will have signs and decals in place to help people to keep their distance.
There will be volunteers for bartenders and helping with sanitizing before and after each draw. We will have a symptom and return to play trackingsystem along with phone and email ACC Covid Hotlines to report any covid-related concerns or symptoms. Please contact me with questions or if you would like to review a copy of our protocols in advance of registering.
